NIL Awareness Month: Building Your Brand the Right Way

The world of sports is changing — and for today’s student-athletes, understanding Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities is essential. NIL gives athletes the power to profit from their personal brand while still in school, opening doors to sponsorships, partnerships, and community impact. But with opportunity comes responsibility. At ConNEXTions Foundation, we’re dedicated to helping young athletes navigate NIL the right way,  with integrity, strategy, and long-term vision.

The Do’s and Don’ts of NIL Deals

 DO know your value.
Your personal brand is built on more than athletic performance — it’s about who you are, what you stand for, and how you connect with your community. Be selective about which brands you represent and make sure they align with your personal goals and image.

DON’T sign before reading the fine print.
Before agreeing to any deal, carefully review the contract. Look for exclusivity clauses, duration, and payment terms. When in doubt, consult a trusted advisor, coach, or attorney who understands NIL compliance. One wrong signature can impact your eligibility or future opportunities.

DO keep your school informed.
Many schools require athletes to disclose NIL partnerships. Transparency helps you stay compliant with NCAA or state regulations and ensures there are no conflicts with school sponsors.

 Financial Literacy: Managing Your Earnings

Earning money as a student-athlete can be exciting — but managing it wisely is key.

  • Budget your income so you can balance personal needs and future goals.
  • Track your taxes: NIL income is taxable, even for high school and college athletes.
  • Plan ahead: Consider saving or investing a portion of your earnings to set yourself up for long-term success.

Remember, NIL isn’t just a short-term opportunity; it’s your introduction to financial independence.

Social Media Responsibility: Protect Your Brand

Your social media presence is your digital résumé. What you post, like, and comment on reflects who you are as a person and as a brand.

  • Stay positive, respectful, and authentic.
  • Use your platform to inspire others and promote your values.
  • Avoid content that could damage your reputation or relationships with sponsors.

Building a clean, consistent, and professional image online can make you more attractive to both recruiters and brands.

The ConNEXTions Approach

At ConNEXTions Foundation, we teach athletes that NIL is about more than money — it’s about ownership. Ownership of your story, your influence, and your future. We encourage every athlete to approach NIL with education, purpose, and professionalism.

Your name, your image, and your likeness are powerful — protect them, grow them, and use them to create lasting impact both on and off the court.

Stay connected with ConNEXTions Foundation for upcoming NIL workshops, mentorship programs, and athlete branding sessions designed to help you take your next step with confidence.
