"As Seattle prepares to host its second FIFA World Cup match Friday, organizers are also commemorating Juneteenth and highlighting the diversity represented by the United States as thousands of fans pack the city for one of the tournament’s marquee group stage matchups.

'When the
USMNT takes the pitch against Australia in Seattle, the world won’t just see a game — they will see the culmination of a journey from freedom and liberation to representation,' the SeattleFWC26 website states.

Juneteenth marks 161 years since slaves in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. It was established as a federal holiday in 2021."
